What Can Active Release Technique Treat?

Overuse, strain, sprain, or injury to soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, muscles, and fascia may lead to the formation of scar tissue, adhesions, and restrictions. These tissue abnormalities cause pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and muscle weakness.

Developed and patented by Dr. P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP, Active Release Technique (ART) aims to identify and address soft tissue injuries through precise manual manipulation. This technique may help a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

How Active Release Technique Works

Active Release Technique is not like a massage. It can be uncomfortable as it works to release the tension of scarred tissue. The purpose is to eliminate the discomfort, pain, inflammation, or other problems caused by scarred tissue.

During the procedure, our chiropractors will feel the area with their hands and identify the tightness or any unusual muscle movement in the area that is bothering you. Once the problem is identified, our chiropractors focus on the target area using a combination of manipulation and appropriate movements. This releases and stretches the soft tissue to break up any adhesions (dense collections of scar tissue formed when muscles and connective tissues are injured) contributing to your pain.

Active Release Technique FAQs

ART targets adhesions between muscle layers, between muscles and nerves, and within individual muscle fibers. These restrictions develop from repetitive motion, acute trauma, or poor posture creating altered biomechanics we correct through precise protocols.

We use specific contact points on affected tissues while patients perform controlled movements. This combination of chiropractor’s pressure and patient motion breaks adhesions more effectively than passive techniques alone.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, shin splints, and IT band syndrome often improve significantly. The technique's specificity makes it effective for conditions where isolated soft tissue restriction limits function.

Through specific tension and motion testing, we identify tissues with altered texture, tension, or tenderness. We correlate these findings with patient activities to create targeted treatment plans at Smith Family Chiropractic Wellness Center.

Chiropractors complete multiple levels of ART training, each focusing on different body regions. Certification requires demonstration of precise technique application and understanding of functional anatomy relationships.

We often perform ART before chiropractic adjustments to improve tissue mobility, allowing joints to move more freely. This combination addresses both soft tissue and joint components of musculoskeletal problems effectively.

We prescribe targeted stretching protocols and movement retraining exercises that reinforce treatment effects. These help prevent adhesion reformation between sessions at our Campbell chiropractic center.

Many notice changes within 3-5 sessions, though complete resolution of chronic conditions may require 8-12 visits. We monitor progress through functional testing and adjust treatment frequency based on tissue response.
